Professional Summary
Dr. Arun Bawa is Assistant Professor of Global Ecosystem Modeling in the Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering. The Global Ecosystem Modeling (GEM) Lab research program advances the science of ecosystem modeling by integrating hydrologic, climatic, land use, and agricultural systems across spatial scales—from local watersheds to entire continents. We utilize process-based models such as SWAT and SWAT+,enhanced with artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and climate projections, to better understand and predict ecosystem responses to environmental change. Our work supports informed decision-making for sustainable water and land management, especially in data-scarce and climate-vulnerable regions. Key innovations from the lab include HAWQS, a reproducible modeling research platform; XGBest, a machine learning tool for estimating in-streamwater quality; and SWAT-VEXA, a large language model chatbot that enhances usability of the SWAT modeling framework. With global collaborations across the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Asia, GEM Lab projects aim to strengthen agricultural resilience, promote water sustainability, and support climate adaptation strategies. Through open-access tools, capacity-building programs, and transparent modeling frameworks, we ensure that cutting-edge science directly informs environmental stewardship and sustainable development worldwide.
