Text Box: The USDA National Needs Ph.D. Fellowships are designed to provide Ph.D. Fellows from underrepresented groups with the scientific training and leadership skills needed to meet the new and emerging challenges in water quality.
This Fellowship Program will:
a)   prepare National Needs Fellows to find solutions to emerging threats to water quality from waterborne contaminants such as pharmaceuticals, hormones, endocrine disrupting chemicals, and pathogens;
b) enroll Fellows in the Hispanic Leadership Program for Agriculture and Natural Resources to develop and improve skills to exercise leadership for diversity in the workplace and implement sustainable environmental policies; and
c) provide Fellows with core competence in areas of environmental chemistry and microbiology, contaminant transport modeling, spatial analysis, and leadership and policy development skills.
The plan is to:
a)   provide the Fellows with the academic training to conduct basic and applied water quality research;
b) provide the Fellows with leadership and policy development skills through the Hispanic Leadership Program in Agriculture and Natural Resources and other programs; and
c) provide the Fellows a global perspective by giving them an opportunity to co-teach environmental courses in a Belgium Study Abroad program
